The Accounting by Design Story

Accounting by Design Limited was originally owned and operated by Amy Hyde and has long been known for providing approachable, reliable accounting services to the Coromandel community. Today, the firm is owned and operated by Geoff Balme, continuing the same client-focused values and commitment to personal service.

In 2024, Amy Balme joined the firm, bringing fresh energy alongside the strong foundations already in place. In 2025, Adele Scobie joined the team, further strengthening Accounting by Design’s ability to support its clients with consistent, hands-on service.

Today, Accounting by Design continues to support individuals and businesses across Mercury Bay, the Coromandel, and beyond, with trusted advice from a team clients know and can rely on.

At Accounting by Design, our mission is to provide personalised, reliable, and professional accounting, bookkeeping, and taxation services to individuals, families, and small businesses. As a family-run practice, we are committed to building lasting relationships with our clients, empowering them to make informed financial decisions, and supporting their growth with integrity, trust, and care.

Meet
The Team

Geoff Balme

Geoff is a Chartered Accountant Fellow with extensive experience in senior leadership and financial management roles across both the public and private sectors. Originally from the Waikato, Geoff and wife Debbie relocated to Whitianga in 2017 after owning a holiday property in the area for many years.

His background includes roles in public practice, the University of Waikato, and AgResearch, as well as leading major project and governance initiatives.

Alongside his professional career, Geoff has a long-standing involvement in sports administration at national and international levels. Outside of work, he enjoys running, cycling, and sailing, and values the lifestyle and community of the Coromandel.

Amy Balme

Amy is a Chartered Accounting and a University of Waikato graduate, holding a Bachelor of Management Studies with First Class Honours in Accounting. She began her career at PwC in Hamilton before spending 12 years overseas, where she held a range of commercial accounting and finance roles across Australia and the UK. Amy returned to New Zealand in early 2024 and joined Accounting by Design, bringing with her a broad perspective and valuable international experience.

Outside of work, Amy enjoys travel and making the most of the outdoors. When she’s not in the office, you’ll often find her camping, diving, or fishing, alongside her partner Jeremy and their Great Dane, Kratos.

Adele Scobie

Adele brings over five years of hands-on bookkeeping experience to Accounting by Design, with strong expertise across accounting fundamentals, Xero, general ledger work, account reconciliations, GST processing, payroll, and compliance. She enjoys working closely with clients and takes pride in providing accurate, reliable support that helps businesses stay on track.

A long-standing member of the Whitianga community, Adele & husband Grant have lived in the area for over 20 years and are raising two teenage boys. Outside of work, Adele volunteers for the Mercury Bay Boating Club and enjoys fishing, spending time outdoors, and supporting her sons in sailing and rugby.
